Copic Must Haves – The Dr. is in the House!

Did someone call a Dr?  I think so!  Let us talk a bit about Copic Multiliners.  If you love Copics like I do then I am sure you have some Multiliners hanging around.  Right?!  If the answer is no, then maybe this will help you decide what you need.  If the answer is yes, depending on the type you have will determine if you need a Dr.’s prescription.  Ok, It’s not that serious. You can do all this from the comfort of your home.

What is a Multiliner?

A multiliner is the ideal pen for all your fine-inking needs.  Starting from as small of a tip as 0.03 and working their way up to a thick medium brush tip.  This pigment-based ink pen is great for details, fine art, comics, modeling, journaling and paper crafting.  The special formula works with Copic markers beautifully.  It is also waterproof and archival.

Did you know there are two different styles?

The Multiliner comes in different styles as well as many sizes.  The first one is DISPOSABLE and is considered the regular Multiliner.  The body of the pen is plastic.   It cost only $3.99.  It has a wide range of tips to choose from.  The most common one I use is the 0.3 and the 0.5.  Remember DISPOSABLE NOT REFILLABLE 🙂

The second one is referred to as the Multiliner SP.  This is refillable using cartridges and the nibs can be replaced.   It has a lightweight sturdy aluminum body. This pen cost $12.49.  It has the same ink as the disposable Multiliner.  There are different cartridges and nibs depending on the one you have.

Tired of waiting in the waiting room?  Ok come on back….let the Dr. see what she can help you with.  Hmmmmmmm….ummmmm…stick out your tongue…..hmmmmmmm.  Well here is the issue.  Your regular Multiliner has gone dry, and that tip is a little bent.  Hmmmmm, Well the good news is that is is disposable and all you have to do is throw it away and get a new one…..problem solved.  If you want to save money in the long run because you use it so frequently…consider buying a Multiliner SP.

Oh you have a Multiliner SP as well (Good choice…the more the merrier).  Hmmmm let me see, Oh this one is also dry and the tip needs to be replaced.  NO PROBLEM…the DR is in the Houz!

Remove the new cartridge from the packaging.  With your fingers, (or the fancy tool you can get through Imagination International Inc.) remove the old cartridge from the end of the pen.  This is simply done by grabbing the black portion and pulling.
Remove the little plastic cap from the new cartridge and discard.
Holding onto the black end piece of the new cartridge insert into the end of the pen barrel until it is snug.  It was that simple!  You now have new ink and can use your pen as soon as the ink makes contact with the inside of the nib.  If your nib is broken or needs to be replaced follow the next few steps. 
Using the handy-dandy tool or your fingernails pull out the metal portion of the nib as shown by the arrow above.
This is what you will see.  (The thin wicking portion of the nib was damaged at some point and was not working properly)  If you own 0.03 and 0.05 these are amazing fine nibs…very fine and can easily be damaged when used incorrectly so changing out the nib is most likely going to happen).  Discard old nib.
The Nibs come in packs of two.  Remove one of the Nibs and insert straight into the end of the top of the Pen.  
You will see the ink start to saturate the fine nib.  You are good to draw, color and create!

Now open up and say AAAAAAAAAAH!

  2. I love these multi liners. I purchased some when I found out the hard way that you can't use Sharpie markers with Copics. It smears. And naturally I didn't find out at the beginning of coloring my project but at the very end. Curses to the Sharpies. Okay, curses only when using with Copic markers.
